For years, friends and relatives told Ma Sandar Tun she should open a restaurant to bring her native Burmese dishes to a wider audience. In January, she and husband Kiichi Yamagiwa, a restaurant contractor, opened Pagan in the Outer Richmond, near the entrance to the Palace of the Legion of Honor. The cozy corner spot features a dramatic peaked ceiling, gold-sponged walls, black tables and cherrywood lattice-back chairs. Two nooks alongside one wall provide more privacy for small groups.

The sleepy intersection of Clement and 33rd streets may not be a charmed location for a restaurant (it previously housed a branch of King of Thai and, before that, a Thai restaurant called Sarin), but if ever one could make a go of the less-than-ideal location, it ought to be Pagan. Owned by a Burmese couple who came to San Francisco by way of a lengthy stopover in Thailand, Pagan offers a menu neatly divided in two: half Thai dishes, half Burmese.

Pagan Restaurant - New Burmese/Thai in Outer Richmond - Awesome

I just got home from an excellent Burmese meal at Pagan Restaurant in the Outer Richmond. I hadn't heard of this place until yesterday - it's been open two weeks. The restaurant is nicely decorated - warm, cozy and somewhat classy, though tables are close together. The restaurant has two separate menus - Burmese and Thai. I liked the fact that the menus are completely separate, and sometimes even include Burmese and Thai versions of the same dish. For instance, we ordered the Burmese green papaya salad, while the table next to us ordered the Thai version which looked very different.
